What is cashmere?
Cashmere or the old English spelling is “Kashmir “and is taken from the Kashmir goats.
Kashmir goats are raised and breed in places like Mongolia, Iran, Tibet India, and china.
The goats originate from places like the Himalayas, so they have to be able to adapt to the various temperatures.
The wool is harvested from the goats during the malting season; they usually shed naturally or are sheared
Cashmere wool is fine and soft it’s the downy coat or winter undercoat.
This undercoat grows as the day length shortens and is associated with an outer coat of coarse hair, which is present all the year and is called guard hair.
Cashmere comes from around the throat and underbelly of the goat, as this part is the most valuable part of the wool.
A lesser grade of wool comes from the legs and back.
The wool that comes from the more valuable area is fine in texture strong, light and extremely soft when made into garments. (See ladies cashmere or mens cashmere)
Then the lower grade of wool is heavier and less expensive making it more affordable to buy a luxury garment.
Cashmere comes in all natural colours, grey, brown and white, but the wool is usually dyed, making it a fashionable luxury item.
Cashmere had started being used in the early 19th century by royal people and incredibly rich merchants.
Cashmere is a very versatile garment. Cashmere is suitable from summer to winter; you can also match it with every other type of clothing, jeans, skirts, dresses, formal, or informal.
The feel of cashmere against the body makes the material one of the most luxurious materials in the world.
Cashmere is even more expensive than silk, wool, cotton or any other material used to make garment.
The thinner the cashmere the better the quality it is!
Thicker cashmere which is a coarser less expensive type is just as warm as the thinner cashmere, which people find hard t believe..
If you have thick cashmere then it will do something called pilling, which means it gathers little balls on the surface. Thinner cashmere doesn’t do this, as it’s a better quality and will keep much longer.
Be careful in a store though. In most stores cashmere is very expensive for good cashmere due to it being rare it has a hefty price tag.
In the shops they will label a cardigan as cashmere and charge more money, what they fail to mention is its only 10% cashmere.
When buying cashmere and determine cashmere at a high quality feel the fabric, if its smooth lightweight and fine it’s a good quality of cashmere. |
