A lawn mower is a machine that is used to cut grass at even length, by either using a blade that rotates on a vertical axis, known as a Rotary mower, or a blade that rotates on a horizontal axis, known as a Reel mower.
Many lawnmowers have been created to deal with different principles of lawn. For example, the smallest of lawn mowers is pushed by a person used for residential lawns. The second for the larger lawn, which is a self contained mower, a person will sit on the mower and control it. Lastly is the mower for the liberal lawns, which is usually pulled by a tractor.
The lawn Mower was invented by a man called Edwin Beard Budding in 1830. Edward Budding was a engineer from Stroud Gloucestershire England.
He got his brilliant creation from a cloth making mill, he used the concept of what’s called a “cutting cylinder”, it mounts on a bench trim, and gives the cloth a smooth alluring finish.
So he took his much useful creation, and joined forces with a man named John Ferrebee, a local engineer and began creating them in a factory in Stroud.
Edwin Budding and John Ferrebee, then let other companies, build duplicates of their machine under a license.
One of the most successful out of these duplicates was by a man called Ransomes of Ipswich, who began making them in 1832, out of all the duplicates this was the most successful still continuing today.
By the 1850’s other companies were introducing their own machines, many very successful to this day.
Today we can pick from 3 main mowers powered by either petrol, electric or Manual. Petrol mowers usually run on 3 to 7 horse power being the most powerful out of the 21st century mowers, they usually have a cylinder with a engine, and have a throttle to decrease and increase engine speed although , petrol mowers do have disadvantages for example being noisy , task of cleaning, storage, transport and fuel.
Secondly there is the Electric lawnmower which can have a cord or no cord, cordless are much more expensive and there are fewer models. However the mowers with cords have many models and are relatively cheap, electric mowers are usually light and robust, although the disadvantage is over rough grass, it may lose its air cushion and not perform to expected standards.
Manual mowers are very straight forward, literally cutting grass to a good standard; unfortunately you have to do it yourself!
In today’s generation of lawn mowers, there are masses of models, ranging from BOSCH , BLACK & DECKER , FLYMO, and lastly ALKO, although these are a selected few , there are many more models of mowers.
