Fire Doors
Why do we need fire doors and where might we see them? Well, they will be in all buildings where the public are going to be. Many home are now sporting fire doors and they are becoming ever more popular due to safety regulations.
The will resist fire heat and smoke for a longer time that the average door. This allows people to take an escape route during a fire without having to rush, therefore making other injuries less likely.
When these doors are made, they are tested to the British Standard BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1, to ensure they are as safe as they can be when up against a roaring fire.
When these doors are made, they are fitted with extra strength hinges. Even the door frame has to be made for strength. Because the door is so heavy it must be well supported and as they should be kept shut at all times, they have a door closing hinge or spring fitted. This is found at the top of the door so if you walk through and don’t shut it behind you, it will close by its self.
However, modern technology has allowed for these doors to stay open if you want them that way and still be safe.
This is because you can now get different types of fittings and functions that tell the door to close only when necessary. They are tied into the alarm system of the building. If the alarm is triggered, the door stop or hinge is told via electronic connection to the alarm, to close. This allows you to have doors open on hot days etc but without losing the safety or protection they are intended to create.
Despite the job they are designed for, they are really very stylish. The doors can be made to fit in with the rooms they are protecting. All shapes and sizes, colours and patterns. You can find one to fit anywhere.
They have a protective strip on the bottom of them to stop the door from becoming damaged by people’s shoes and to keep the door in good condition. These can come in variations of size and style.
Without a doubt, these doors save lives every day all over the world. They have become a part of every office, sheltered accommodation and hotel (to name but a few places) all over and as they are stylish yet practical, even Rented homes such as council run and private housing association type properties will probably have them fitted as standard in the near future. |
